A collection of ambient and atmospheric works from the mid-1980s reflecting the artist’s earlier influences. Captured here, for the first time on CD, is music evocative of cavernous underground warehouses and abandoned munitions factories, deep cold Canadian winters, and lost childhood memories. Bacchus has said of this release: “Returning to these earlier musical works has given me insight into my compositional process, and a chance to rediscover my connection with electronic and Ambient music. For some this may provide the “missing link” to the origins of my other albums.”
Going back to this earlier material was actually a consequence of my work as a producer. As I became involved in the ambient music scene again, I noticed that several albums which had interested me in the mid-1980s were out of print. While choosing material for reissue, I began to investigate some of my own early works. Pieces from two previously released cassettes as well as a number of other unreleased compositions reflect my earlier ambient music influences. My first forays into electronic and ambient music started when I was fourteen, with two Telefunken reel-to-reel tape machines. Using little more than sounds recorded with friends, I began to experiment with splicing tape and layering multi-track compositions. I progressed to composing with some of the earliest electronic music equipment available in the late 1970’s: banks of oscillators, filter devices, tape loop machines and one of the first synthesizers on the market, the British-made “Putney VCS3”. This return to earlier musical works has given me insight into my compositional process and has made me newly aware of my deep fascination with electronic and Ambient music.

With the reissue of this material on“Ambient Origins” I have more or less come full circle in my recording career. During this process I have always tried to keep two things in mind. First, how the listener was affected by my music, and second, to always challenge myself and my listeners with innovative forms of expression.
