about

Some of the synth pads on this track emulate the Indian drone instrument, the tamboura. This was originally written in 1986. In between 1981 and 1984, I had been studying Indian Music and the south Indian drum, the Mrdangam. Some of my writing at this time was influenced by Indian music. This piece more or less is an extended Alap section from an traditional composition. An Alap is a slow, rubato section which outlines the raga used and the melody before the tablas and the formal "composed" structure of the piece is performed.
